Why are dead bait/lure ticket prices increasing?
It’s been a challenging season for lots of fisheries around the country and it would be fair to say that pike fishing has being slower than normal in many parts of the country, not just at Chew. The cold spring with artic winds and the warm prolonged spell in July, no doubt, had an impact on the back end fishing. There are always seasonal variations in the quality of fishing and as we all know as anglers, just because one season is slower than normal it doesn’t mean to say the following season will be the same.
We do care about the pike stock in our waters. We recognize that pike fishing pressure can be damaging and we have tried to reduce pressure year on year for several seasons now. Being cautious going into season 2019, we feel that it would be sensible to reduce the pike fishing pressure more than ever before. This has meant that we have decided to reduce the boat days by 4 and reduce bank fishing days by 3 in season 2019. Financially this has an impact and is one of the reasons why prices have risen. It’s also one of the reasons why more boat and bank slots are being auctioned off in season 2019.
Our costs keep on rising and we feel our price increases are fair. Pike fishing revenue has increasingly become an important part of our business and without it, we simply wouldn’t be able to offer sport fishing at the lakes.
Sadly, fly fishing participation has been on decline for some years and the fishery can no longer survive on trout fishing income alone. As fly fishing participation declines, further financial pressures are put upon our department to be financially viable. We are doing our best to combat this, working closely with angling bodies and local clubs to bring new people into the sport.
We still believe dead bait/lure fishing tickets at Chew Valley are a premium offering. We recognise that fishing in autumn 2018 wasn’t the usual Chew, with fewer 30+ pike being caught that ever before. That being said, February’s fishing continued to be exceptional with over twenty 30lb+ fishing being reported, topped by a magnificent 41lb 2oz fish. We do truly believe that 2019 has the potential to offer premium pike fishing for our customers.

Guided days with John Horsey
9 days of Guided Pike Fishing with resident professional guide John Horsey will continue to be offered in 2019.
John has been guiding on Chew Valley Lake for the past 22 years and has been involved with the pike trials since they began. His knowledge of the lake and his incredible record speaks for itself with many captures of pike to over 30lbs using both lures and deadbaits. He also was present when a magnificent fly caught fish of 40lb 8oz graced his net whilst guiding Enrico Pini.
Bristol Water are offering John’s services as an extension to the days already offered in 2017+ 2018. All bookings are to be paid directly to Bristol Water Fisheries and notification of attendees must be given with 24 hours of booking date.

Fishing dates and agreements with our stakeholders
Season 2019 continues flexibility for cancelled days due to adverse weather, offering a rescheduled date first rather than having to offer a full refund immediately.
We will continue offering weekend fishing dates, something that was well received by our customers in 2018.
The success of an earlier start in 2017 and 2018 means that the autumn bank and boat fishing dates will continue to commence early in October. As ever, we will monitor weed growth around this time and offer alternate dates if we feel the weed growth is a significant issue. Limiting the amount of boat fishing in November reduces the risk of cancellations due to rough weather, but it does also increase the potential for warmer water temperatures. This is something that we will have to monitor and evaluate jointly with our experienced anglers.
A continued early finish date in November supports conservation efforts; with November being a particularly sensitive time of year for overwintering birds at this internationally important conservation site. A healthy relationship with other lake users and stakeholders such as Natural England is important to the fishery and the CVL fishing community in general!
